A retarding agent for biological growth of underwater subjects includes synthetic compounds. As synthetic compound the retarding agent contains iron (III) tris-(1-nitroso-2-naphtholate) or iron (III) tris-(2-nitroso-1-naphtholate), or cobalt (III) tris-(2-nitroso-1-naphtholate), or chromium (III) tris-(2-nitroso-1-naphtholate). In addition the retarding agent contains iron (III) hydroxide and/or copper (II) hydroxide sols.
