Abstract

Description

The present invention relates to a smoking product with self-extinguishing, which has a modified design of rim wrappers.

Combustible tobacco products, such as cigarettes, typically contain ground tobacco or cut tobacco (usually in the form of cut filler) surrounded by a paper wrapper that forms the tobacco core. This cut or ground tobacco may be a single type of tobacco or a mixture of two or more types of tobacco. Combustible smoking products may also further include a filter aligned end-to-end with the tobacco rod. Typically, the filter includes a plug of filter material such as cellulose acetate wadding. A combination smoking product usually contains a rim paper that covers both the tobacco rod and the filter to keep them connected. Said rim paper usually reaches the final nozzle segment of the filter.

A consumer uses a combustible smoking product, such as a cigarette, by lighting the end of a tobacco rod and burning the cut or ground tobacco contained therein. The consumer then inhales the smoke by inhaling on the opposite end (mouthpiece end or filter end) of the cigarette. When the consumer has finished burning the tobacco rod, the consumer usually has to actively extinguish the cigarette in the ashtray by mechanically impacting the cigarette butt.

Previously, it was proposed to create a smoking product in which at least part of the tobacco rod is surrounded by wrapping paper, which provides a reduced ability of the cigarette to ignite (Nedysey Sidagene Idpyop Rgorepzpyu, ASIR). This term generally refers to a wrapping paper containing a base web with a nominal permeability to which areas of additional low permeability material are applied in such a way that they run in the transverse direction and are separated from each other by gaps in the longitudinal direction of the smoking product. As an example, said zones of additional material may contain a mixture of starch and calcium carbonate. This has been found to have the desired effect that the smoking product, if left in a free-burning environment such as an ashtray, self-extinguishes more quickly than a standard cigarette. Signs of low ignitability or self-extinguishing are considered desirable safety features.

According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a smoking article comprising a wrapped rod of smoking material and a filter comprising one or more filter segments, wherein said filter is axially aligned with the wrapped rod of smoking material and abuts said rod of smoking material in the area of their connection. The smoking article further includes a rim wrap that surrounds at least a portion of the filter and attaches the filter to the wrapped rod of smoking material. A substantially transparent rim covering tape surrounds the filter and overlies the rim wrap at the upstream end of the filter such that the rim covering tape overlies the interface between the wrapped rod of smoking material and the filter. The tape that covers the rim is made of an airtight sheet of non-paper cellulosic material obtained by processing cellulose to form regenerated cellulosic fibers.

In addition, according to the second aspect of the present invention, a method of manufacturing a smoking product is proposed. The method includes stages in which a rod of smoking material with a wrapper is provided; attach the filter to the rod of smoking material with the help of a rim wrapper, and the end of the filter adjoins the rod of smoking material in the connection area; and placing the rim covering tape around the filter and over the rim wrap at the upstream end of the filter such that the rim covering tape overlies the interface between the wrapped smoking material rod and the filter. The tape that covers the rim is made of an airtight cellulosic sheet of non-paper cellulosic material obtained by processing cellulose with the formation of regenerated cellulosic fibers.

It should be understood that any features described with respect to one aspect of the present invention are equally applicable to any other aspect of the present invention.

As used herein, the terms "upstream" and "further downstream" are used to describe the relative positions of elements or parts of elements of a smoking article with respect to the direction in which the consumer puffs from the smoking article during use. The smoking products described herein include a downstream end and an opposite upstream end. When using, the user pulls on the end of the smoking product located further downstream. The downstream end, which is also described as the mouthpiece end, is located further downstream relative to the upstream end, which may also be described as the distal end.

In the context of this description, the term "cellulose" is not used to describe sheet material in which cellulose fibers of natural origin from pulp (for example, spruce pulp, pine pulp, beech pulp, birch pulp and pulp of other wood species) are pressed into the form of paper, heavy paper , kraft paper, adhesive kraft paper, cardboard and cardboard board. Instead, the term "lacellulose" is used to describe a non-paper material that is obtained by treating cellulose to form so-called "regenerated cellulose fibers", such as cellophane and viscose, as well as other derivatives of cellulose acetate and cellulose triacetate, which can also be formed into films.

In this description, the term "self-extinguishing" is used to denote the smoldering characteristics of a smoking product under free burning conditions. To evaluate self-extinguishing, laboratory tests are carried out at a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius plus/minus 3 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity of 55 percent plus/minus 5 percent, and both of these parameters must be monitored using a recording hygrothermograph. Combustion products formed during the tests are removed with the help of a hood (hoods). Prior to the start of the tests, the test smoking products are conditioned at a relative humidity of 55 percent plus/minus 5 percent and a temperature of 23 degrees Celsius plus/minus C degrees Celsius for 24 hours. Immediately before the beginning of the tests, smoking products are placed in glass laboratory beakers to ensure free access of air.

Self-extinguishing tests are carried out inside a closed space or test box. For lighting smoking products for the purpose of testing them

They use a single hole smoking machine or an electric lighter. During the tests, the device or "angle holder" holds the test cigarettes by their end at an angle of 0 degrees (horizontal), 45 degrees and/or 90 degrees (vertical). Preferably, twenty (20) smoking articles are tested at each of the following angular positions: 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. When using more than one device, these devices are preferably placed in such a way that the ends of the smoking products are located at a distance from each other to avoid mutual interference. If the smoking product extinguishes before the front of the smoldering coal reaches the rim paper, this result is considered "self-extinguishing"; on the other hand, if the smoking product continues to smolder until the smoldering coal front reaches the rim paper, this result is evaluated as "no self-extinguishing". Thus, for example, a self-extinguishing ratio of 95 percent indicates that 95 percent of the tested smoking products exhibited self-extinguishing under free-burning conditions, while a self-extinguishing ratio of 20 percent indicates that only 20 percent of the tested smoking products exhibited self-extinguishing in conditions of free combustion.

The specified coefficient of self-extinguishing can be expressed in the form of the following values: "coefficient of self-extinguishing at a value of 0 degrees", "coefficient of self-extinguishing at a value of 45 degrees" or "coefficient of self-extinguishing at a value of 90 degrees", each of which refers to the coefficient of self-extinguishing at a certain tested coal. In addition, the self-extinguishing coefficient can be expressed in the form of "average self-extinguishing coefficient", which is the average value for three angular positions, namely the average value of: (i) "self-extinguishing coefficient at the value of 0 degrees", (ii) "self-extinguishing coefficient at a value of 45 degrees" and (iii) "coefficient of self-extinguishing at a value of 90 degrees". A reference to "self-extinguishing coefficient" does not imply a distinction between self-extinguishing at 0 degrees, self-extinguishing at 45 degrees, self-extinguishing at 90 degrees or average self-extinguishing coefficients and may refer to any of them.

In the context of this document, the phrases "self-extinguish under free-burning conditions" or "self-extinguishing under free-burning conditions" refer to extinguishing a smoldering cigarette without taking puffs when the cigarette is in free-burning conditions.

The term "flammability (33)" refers to the ability of smoking articles to cause combustion of the substrate on which they are placed. The flammability (33) must be low enough to eliminate, reduce, or essentially eliminate the possibility of the smoking article igniting the substrate, on in which it is placed in a state of combustion.The ability to ignite can be measured according to IBO 12863:2010(E).

The term "substantially airtight" is used herein to refer to a sheet material which, when applied as a strip to the filter-rod junction, allows less than 5 percent dilution of inhaled smoke as a result of ambient air entering the filter. Said essentially airtight sheet material may be non-porous and may not contain any perforations. Preferably, the substantially air-tight ficel has an air permeability of less than 200 Saugesia units, more preferably less than 100 Saugesia units, and even more preferably less than 20 Saugesia units

Sogezia. In some of these cases, the air permeability of said essentially air-tight sheet material may have a lower limit of 1 Sogevia unit.

The Saugesia unit is a unit of air permeability of the sheet material, which corresponds to the flow of air (in cubic centimeters per minute) passing through 1 square centimeter of the surface of the tested material at a gauge pressure of 1.00 kilopascals. The measuring pressure is the pressure difference between the two surfaces of the tested material during the measurement. Thus, the units corresponding to the Saugezia unit are cubic centimeters per minute per square centimeter (cmUhv''cm'?) at 1.00 kilopascals. A suitable method for determining the air permeability of sheet materials for use in this invention is described in the IBO 2965:2009 standard.

Air permeability for the tested sample in units of Sogevsia (Sogevia ipiv, SI) is calculated by the formula:

The term "substantially transparent" is used herein to describe a sheet material that can transmit at least a significant portion of the incident light through it, so that observation through the material is provided. In this invention essentially

The clear tape that covers the rim can transmit enough light through it that the underlying wrapper is visible through the tape that covers the rim. Said substantially transparent tape covering the rim may be completely transparent. Alternatively, the tape that covers the rim can have a lower level of transparency, but still transmit enough light for the underlying wrapper to be visible through the tape that covers the rim.

The term "substantially opaque" is used herein to describe a sheet material through which incident light cannot pass, such that observation through the material is impossible.

The term "colored" is used herein to describe sheet material having a color or colors, particularly the opposite of white or neutral. An essentially transparent sheet material may also be colored if it differentially absorbs or reflects incident light of different wavelengths, so that the sheet material appears tinted with a color determined by the nature of this absorption (or reflection). In the smoking products according to the present invention, the filter and the rod made of smoking material are abutted end to end in the area of their connection. The filter is surrounded by a rim wrapper. A strip of air-tight cellulosic material is placed around the filter at the interface between the filter and the rod on top of the rim wrap. This tape that covers the rim is made of cellulose sheet material that is essentially air impermeable.

Due to the fact that the tape that covers the rim is made of essentially airtight sheet material, the self-extinguishing time of the smoking product is significantly reduced. As a result, a smoking product, such as a cigarette, left in free-burning conditions in an ashtray quickly self-extinguishes. In addition, the consumer does not need to mechanically affect the residual part of the smoking product to stop burning. In doing so, it has been demonstrated that the use of a cellulosic sheet material such as cellophane provides the advantage of reducing the visual staining of the filter by the heat generated by combustion as the cone approaches the filter.

The rim covering tape of the present invention can be conveniently used in any known filter arrangement and does not require modification of existing rim wrap or wrap arrangements. In addition, the rim covering tape of the present invention can be easily incorporated into a standard rim wrap, so that standard manufacturing equipment and techniques can be used to implement this rim covering tape.

Preferably, the tape that covers the rim is made of a substantially airtight cellulosic sheet material. More preferably, the tape that covers the rim is made of cellophane. This is particularly preferred because the cellophane can be made as a substantially transparent material and thus the visual impact of the tape covering the rim will be minimized. Other suitable materials include films that are able to block the penetration of ambient oxygen into the filter.

Preferably, the tape covering the rim has a width of at least about 3 millimeters.

More preferably, the tape covering the rim has a width of at least about 4 millimeters. Additionally or alternatively, the tape covering the rim preferably has a width of no more than 10 millimeters. More preferably, the tape that covers the rim has a width of no more than 8 millimeters. In some preferred embodiments, the tape covering the rim is approximately 5 millimeters wide. As a further alternative, the tape covering the rim is of such a width as to substantially surround the filter along its entire length. As a result, the visual impact of the rim wrap tape is also minimized because the rim wrap tape will be substantially the same length as, and substantially flush with, the underlying rim wrap.

Preferably, the tape covering the rim has a thickness of at least about 15 microns.

Additionally or alternatively, the tape covering the rim preferably has a thickness of less than about 60 microns.

Preferably, the tape covering the rim may have a weight of at least about 20 g/m2, more preferably at least about 30 g/m2. Alternatively or additionally, the tape that covers the rim can preferably have a grammage of less than about 75 g/m2, more preferably less than about 60 g/m2.

The tape covering the rim is preferably substantially transparent. More specifically, the tape that covers the rim can be made of light sheet material or tinted sheet material, and this sheet material is transparent and colored. It can be white, neutral, black or colored. In some preferred embodiments, the tape that covers the rim can have a typical color of rim wrappers commonly used in smoking products.

The tape that covers the rim is attached to the rim wrap and thus secured in place. Preferably, the tape covering the rim is applied by lamination to the rim wrapper. For example, cellulose tape can be applied by lamination to a paper wrapper. The outer casing preferably runs along the entire length of the filter. In preferred embodiments, the rim wrapper is formed from a paper wrapper, as in conventional smoking products.

Preferably, the rim wrap has an air permeability of less than about 200 units

Sogezia, more preferably less than about 100 Sogeuzia units, and even more preferably less than about 20 Sogezia units. In some preferred embodiments, the rim paper is substantially airtight. Preferably, the rim wrapper has a thickness of at least about 14 microns, more preferably at least about 20 microns. Additionally or alternatively, the rim wrap preferably has a thickness of less than about a micron, more preferably less than about 40 microns.

Preferably, the smoking product contains one ventilation zone, so that in the process of smoking the smoking product, it is possible to achieve the desired level of ventilation of the filter.

Preferably, the ventilation zone contains at least one circular row of perforation holes that pass through the rim wrapper. In some preferred embodiments, the ventilation zone 50 includes two circular rows of perforation holes that pass through the rim wrapper.

For example, perforations can be made on a production line during the manufacturing process of a smoking product. Preferably, each circular row of perforations contains from 8 to 30 perforations. In particular, one or more rows of perforation holes that pass through the rim paper can preferably be made in such a place that they will not impair the self-extinguishing effect created by the tape that covers the rim. In smoking products according to the present invention, the filter may comprise one or more filter segments. Each segment of the filter may contain filter material, and is preferably made in the form of a plug of fibrous filter material, such as cellulose acetate tow or paper. The filter plasticizer can be applied to the fibrous filter material in the usual manner by spraying it onto the separated fibers, preferably before any additional material is applied to the filter material. Alternatively or additionally, smoking products according to the present invention may contain one or more filter segments containing carbon.

Preferably, the filter is wrapped in ficel. More preferably, each segment of the filter is individually wrapped in ficel. Alternatively, a single phycelle may surround two or more adjacent filter segments to form a wrapped filter.

The self-extinguishing time for a smoking article according to the present invention is at least about 15 percent less than a similar time for a smoking article without a tape covering the rim. Preferably, the self-extinguishing time for a smoking article according to the present invention is about 20 percent less than a similar time for a smoking article without a tape covering the rim.

The rod of smoking material is preferably a tobacco rod. Said tobacco rod may typically contain a portion of cut tobacco filler surrounded by a paper wrapper. Preferably, the tobacco rod may contain a densified region at the downstream end where the packing density of the cut tobacco filler is higher than the base packing density of the cut tobacco filler in the tobacco rod. Thus, the advantage of being able to further increase the self-extinguishing effect created by the tape covering the rim is provided. Preferably, the packing density in the compacted region at the downstream end is increased by at least 3 percent compared to the base packing density. More preferably, the packing density in the compacted region at the downstream end is increased by at least 5 percent compared to the base packing density.

Smoking products according to the present invention can be made by forming a wrapped rod of smoking material and attaching a filter to this rod by means of a rim wrap so that the filter and the rod are end-to-end in the mating region. This can be done using standard equipment.

Additionally, methods of manufacturing smoking products according to the present invention require the placement of a tape that covers a rim surrounding the filter and overlies the rim wrap,

Preferably, the tape covering the rim is placed on the rim wrap prior to wrapping the rim wrap around the filter and smoking material rod. As an example, a rim wrap may have a rim covering tape applied thereto by lamination.

This is aimed at providing the advantage of simplifying and speeding up the manufacturing process.

In fig. 1 shows a schematic view of a smoking product 100 according to the first embodiment of the present invention. The same smoking article 100, but with the wrapper partially removed, is also shown in FIG. 2. The smoking product 100 contains a tobacco rod 101, which is surrounded by a rod wrapper. In addition, the smoking product 100 contains a filter 102 containing a plug 103 of filter material surrounded by a wrapper 104 of the filter. The end of the filter 102 adjoins the tobacco rod 101, so that between the filter 102 and the tobacco rod 101 a connection area 105 is formed. The rim wrap 106 surrounds substantially the entire filter 102 and secures the filter 102 to the wrapped tobacco rod 101. Additionally, the smoking article 100 includes a substantially transparent tape 107 that covers a rim surrounding the filter 102 and rests on top of the rim wrap 106 in an upstream position. flow end of the filter 102. Example 1

The self-extinguishing properties of the above-described smoking product according to the present invention were evaluated using a smoking machine in which the smoking product was smoked until the burning cone reached a location 2 mm upstream of the rim wrapper. At this point, the smoking product according to the present invention remained in free burning conditions, and the time required for the smoking product to self-extinguish was counted.

The self-extinguishing process of the smoking product according to the present invention was compared with the self-extinguishing process of other, control, smoking products. For this purpose, the same measurement as described above was subjected to: control smoking product 1 -- a cigarette having the same characteristics as the smoking product according to the present invention, but without the tape that covers the rim; control smoking product 2 - a cigarette that is identical to the specified smoking product, but with an impermeable tape that covers the rim, which is made of wrapping paper; control smoking product C is a cigarette that is identical to the specified smoking product but with a rim covering tape made of aluminum foil approximately 10 microns thick.

Table 1 below contains the results of these measurements. The percentage reduction in self-extinguishing time was calculated relative to the control self-extinguishing time of control smoking product 1, i.e. the product without the tape covering the rim.

Thus, the experimental results showed that the self-extinguishing of the smoking product according to the present invention occurs much faster than in the case of a standard cigarette.

In addition, they showed that a rim covering tape made from an airtight cellulosic sheet material such as cellophane provides a significantly more pronounced reduction in self-extinguishing time than tapes made from other covering materials.

Claims (14)

FORMULA OF THE INVENTION 1. A smoking product that contains: a wrapped rod made of smoking material; a filter comprising one or more filter segments, wherein said filter is axially aligned with a wrapped rod of smoking material and butts against said wrapped rod of smoking material in a mating region; a rim wrap surrounding at least a portion of the filter and attaching the filter to the wrapped rod of smoking material; tape covering the rim surrounding the filter and overlying the rim wrap at the upstream end of the filter such that the tape covering the rim is overlying the area of contact between the wrapped rod of smoking material and the filter, the tape covering a rim made of an essentially airtight sheet of cellophane. 2. The smoking article of claim 1, wherein the tape covering the rim is substantially transparent. 3. A smoking product according to claim 1 or 2, in which the rim wrapper is essentially transparent. 4. A smoking article according to any of the preceding claims, in which the tape covering the rim extends at least 3 mm longitudinally along the smoking article. 5. A smoking article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the tape covering the rim extends longitudinally along the smoking article for a distance that is less than about the longitudinal width of the rim wrapper. 6. A smoking product according to any of the previous items, in which the downstream end of the tape covering the rim is located at a distance of at least 15 millimeters from the downstream end of the filter. 7. A smoking product according to any of the previous items, in which the end of the tape covering the rim is located upstream, located at a distance of no more than 5 millimeters from the connection area between the filter and the wrapped rod of smoking material. 8. A smoking article according to any of the preceding claims, in which the band covering the rim is made of tinted sheet material. 9. A smoking article according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the tape covering the rim is attached to the rim wrapper. 10. A smoking product according to any of the previous items, in which the rim wrapper is a paper wrapper. 11. The smoking product according to claim 9, in which the tape covering the rim is applied to the paper wrapper in the form of a laminated layer. 12. The smoking article of any of the preceding claims, wherein the self-extinguishing time of the smoking article is at least 15 percent less than the self-extinguishing time of a corresponding smoking article without the tape covering the rim. 13. The method of manufacturing a smoking product, which includes the stages of: providing a rod of smoking material with a wrapper; attach the filter to the rod of smoking material with the help of a rim wrapper, and the end of the filter adjoins the rod of smoking material in the connection area; and placing the rim covering tape around the filter and over the rim wrap at the upstream end of the filter such that the rim covering tape lies over the interface between the wrapped smoking material rod and the filter, and the rim covering tape , made of cellophane. 14. The method according to claim 13, in which the tape covering the rim is placed on the rim wrap before the step of attaching the filter to the rod of smoking material by means of the rim wrap.
