A process for preparation of 1,4-butanediol provides for two phase catalytic hydrogenizing of dialkyl ether of butendiolic acid under elevated temperature and pressure with the use on the second stage of copper-chromium catalyst. To increase quality of end product hydrogenizing on the first stage is carried out on a nickel-containing catalyst.
