In this invention, a different type of relay experiment is introduced as an identification method, which aims to identify simple models in terms of first-order-plus-dead-time (FOPDT) for tuning PI/PID controllers. The identification is conducted by inserting a simple compensator into the relay feedback loop, and the objective is to make the output behave like the one from an integrator-plus-dead-time (IPDT) process. On-line adjusting the compensator will lead to the identification of the parameters of FOPDT model. Then, a method and several artificial neural networks are provided for PI/PID controller tuning to make the optimal trade-off between performance for set-point tracking and disturbance rejection in the conventional feedback control system.
