Abstract

A connector for a high density multi-conductor ribbon cable. The connector in one embodiment includes a cover member and a base member wherein the base member includes indentations that are adapted to receive the ribbon cable and position the ribbon cable in a desired orientation with respect to openings that communicate with the indentation when the ribbon cable is captured between the cover member and the base member. A plurality of contacts are then connected to the conductors of the captured ribbon cable via the openings that communicate with the indentations. In one embodiment, the openings in the base member include a guide section that is adapted to guide the contacts into the conductors of the ribbon cable during the insertion process. In another embodiment, the connector includes a plurality of contacts where the contacts have at least one indentation that is adapted to increase the distance between the outer surface of the contact and an adjacent conductor when the contact is connected to a conductor of the ribbon cable. The at least one indentation is further adapted to receive displaced insulation surrounding the conductor so as to improve isolation between the contacts and adjacent conductors or contacts and further reduce the stress on the insulation that could result in cold flow of the insulation over time.
