A light-screening coating composition containing a crabonaceous black pigment having a specific surface area of 50 m<SP>2</SP>/g or less and a polymeric material is useful for forming a film with a fine and accurate pattern as the light-screening thin film of color filters for LCD, which film is excellent in various properties, including light-screening property required for such light-screening thin film; and also is excellent in storage stability and dispersion stability. A substrate having a light-screening thin film interlaced between transparent colored fine patterns on the surface thereof, the light-screening thin film being obtained by using said composition. A process for producing said substrate.
