Abstract

This invention provides an arbitration technique for accessing data bus shared by several competing sources. Each competing source is given a weighted priority value, though can be adjusted later, based on the bandwidth requirement of each competing source, and this value will be taken as the initial value. In the arbitration process, each of these weighted priority values is compared against all other requesting sources and the source with the lowest weighted priority value is allowed to gain access to the data bus. The weighted priority value of the selected source is decreased by one in the next round of comparison. A two-stage arbitration system is employed under this invention, in which each and every competing source will be assigned to a certain group. The request of each competing source within the same grouping is sent for the first stage arbitration, from which a source elected by the first stage arbitrator in each grouping is then sent to the second stage arbitrator for further comparison. Again, the source with the lowest weighted priority value is selected in the arbitration process. After the arbitration process has completed, the weighted priority values of all competing sources having sent out bus request will be adjusted accordingly.
