Abstract

A method for the preparation of flexible polyurethane foams by reacting a polyisocyanate containing at least 85% by weight of 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate or a liquid variant thereof with a polyol composition comprising at least one poly(oxyethylene-oxyalkylene) polyol having an average nominal hydroxyl functionality of from 2 to 6, a number average hydroxyl equivalent weight of from 1000 to 3000, and an average oxyethylene content of from 50 to 85% by weight and with water in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of an alkali or alkaline earth metal carboxylate salt. A method for the preparation of flexible polyurethane foams by reacting a polyisocyanate containing at least 85% by weight of 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate or a liquid variant thereof with a polyol composition comprising at least one poly(oxyethylene-oxypropylene) polyol having an average nominal hydroxyl functionality of from 2 to 6, a number average hydroxyl equivalent weight of from 1000 to 3000, and an average oxyethylene content of from 50 to 85% by weight and with water in an amount of 0.25 to 20% by weight based on the weight of the polyol composition in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of an alkali or alkaline earth metal carboxylate salt, which amount is 0.1 to 5 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of reactants, the isocyanate index ranging from 10 to 120, and, the carboxylate being selected from aliphatic carboxylates having 2-10 carbon atoms and from those having the formula R-E-A-COO wherein A is a hydrocarbon diradical having 1-6 carbon atoms; E is -O- or -OCO- and R is X-R1-(OR2)n- wherein X is CH3- or OH-, R1 is a hydrocarbon diradical having 1-8 carbon atoms, R2 is a hydrocarbon diradical having 2-4 carbon atoms and n is 0 to 10.
