Abstract

A new intelligent automotive steering system by the name of cooperative copilot is proposed to enhance driving safety through a smart steering actuator which receives data from an image-based sensor. The copilot, which is a computerized system with the expert knowledge on vehicle dynamics, is constantly monitoring the vehicular status from a camera and a steering wheel sensor to provide some aiding torque in steering as a new way of power steering in normal conditions, and to provide some correcting actions in steering if needed. Therefore, a new hardware of so called smart steering actuator is proposed so that both the human driver and the copilot can control steering actions. Some algorithms are developed to extract vehicle motion variables from the image-based sensing system. A hierarchy control strategy is developed for the copilot to provide the intelligent steering aid for the human driver based on the expert knowledge built in the computer.
