Abstract

Spent nuclear fuel elements having a plurality of control-rod guide sleeves are contained for transport and storage by loading the fuel elements into respective seats of a basket in a shielded container, providing neutron absorbers in at least some of the control-rod guide sleeves, and closing the containers on the elements with the neutron absorbers. The neutron absorbers include boron and are normally tubular and fit snugly in the control-rod guide sleeves.
