Abstract

The objective of this invention is to reduce the cost of chemicals and to control sludge bulking in aeration tank. The incoming wastewater is necessary to adjust pH value to neutralization before the organic wastewater was treated by an activated sludge process. However, the sludge bulking occurred frequently in activated sludge resulting in high SS (suspended solids) concentration and turbidity in effluent. The process combined a continuous aeration tank with an intermittent aeration tank in this invention is applied to a low pH wastewater which is not need to neutralize by NaOH and flew directly into the first stage aeration tank. The volatile organic acids were decomposed in this stage, the rest of organic pollutants were treated by an intermittent aeration tank which followed by a continuous aeration tank. The dissolved oxygen (DO) in the second stage is equal to zero during non-aeration periods to select microorganisms in terms of zoogloea bacteria rather than filamentous bacteria. The advantage of this process is to treat organic pollutants, to control sludge bulking, and to avoid a high pH in the final effluent.
