Acrolein copolymer prepared from acrolein and one or more polyhydric alcohols, in which the average molecular weight of the copolymer is 1000-10000 g/mol, the polyhydric alcohols are selected from 1,2-ethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol, 1,4-butylene glycol, glycerol, cyclohexene glycol and/or polyethylene glycol, and the weight ratio of polyhydric acids to acrolein is 1:0.4 to 1:1, the process is characterized by release of monomeric acrolein in aqueous systems under pH>7 and hence a prolonged effect on microorganisms, in which
