Abstract

An apparatus for lighting a discharge lamp, which comprises a d.c. power source, a transistor inverter circuit for transforming the d.c. voltage of the d.c. power source into a high frequency voltage, and a plurality of serially connected discharge lamps lighted by the transistor inverter circuit, a ballast choke controlling the lamp current of the plurality of discharge lamps, start capacitors separately connected to the two ends of the plurality of discharge lamps through an electrode and starting the discharge lamps by the serial resonance of the ballast choke; and is characterized in comprising: a detection circuit for detecting the status of the end of lifespan when at least one of the plurality of discharge lamps has reached the status of the end of lifespan; a control circuit for enabling the normal discharge lamps to remain discharging and the discharge lamp being at the status of the end of lifespan to discontinue discharging and to form an electrode preheating state thereby reducing the output of the transistor inverter circuit.
