Abstract
An optical waveguide amplifier doped with erbium, which comprises: an optical waveguide fiber including a core region with a section of length and having a net positive total dispersion D and in contact with the surrounding cladding, the core region including erbium which is at its fundamental state and distributed along the length of the waveguide fiber; optical pumping means for providing a pumping light to excite erbium to an energy level higher than the fundamental state; and coupling means for adding the pumping light and the solition pulse into the waveguide fiber; in which the dispersion waveguide fiber amplifier generates a shift within +3.0 dB and 5.2 dB in each solition pulse maximum relative to a level reference basic solition energy of a standardized unit, under such an energy magnitude the self-modulation and the group speed dispersion D being in balance.
