Abstract

A process for separating polyethylene terephthalate ("PET") from other materials, which comprises the following steps: (a) reacting an alkanediol or alkanediols at a temperature between 130℃ and a temperature 20℃ below the boiling point of ethanediol with a PET-containing material for a predetermined period of time to transesterify the PET-containing material and form a mixture containing embrittled PET; and (b) crushing the mixture and separating uncrushed material from the crushed material contains PET.
