Abstract

A process for the production of anhydrous hydrochloric acid, which is characterized in a distillation apparatus consisting of two-based distillation towers, the process comprising the steps of: (1) distilling, in a first distillation tower, a hydrochloric acid feed at a pressure not lower than the atmospheric pressure but not higher than 2 kg/cm2.G to form a first dilute hydrochloric acid having an azeotropic composition as a first bottom fraction and a concentrated hydrochloric acid having a hydrochloric acid concentration of between 30 and 42 % by weight as a first top fraction, the hydrochloric acid feed having a HCl concentration higher than the azeotropic composition at the first pressure , (2) distilling, in a second distillation tower, at a second pressure higher than 2 kg/cm2.G and at a temperature not higher than 160℃ the concentrated hydrochloric acid top fraction obtained in step (1) to form anhydrous hydrochloric acid as a second top fraction and a second dilute hydrochloric acid having a hydrochloric acid concentration higher than the first dilute hydrochloric acid and less than 35 % by weight as a second bottom fraction, and (3) recycling the hydrochloric acid obtained from the bottom of the second distillation tower to the first distillation tower.
