An antiferroelectric liquid crystal display element, which is characterized in comprising: a substrate with a plurality of pixel electrodes and a plurality of active elements arranged in matrix and connected to the pixel electrodes; another substrate forming common electrodes facing the pixel electrodes; an antiferroelectric liquid crystal sealed between the substrates and comprising a first ferroelectric phase with liquid crystal molecules aligned in approximately a first direction, a second ferroelectric phase with liquid crystal molecules aligned in approximately a second direction, and liquid crystal molecules aligned in the first direction and liquid crystal molecules aligned in the second direction, an antiferroelectric phase with its mean oriented direction approximately coinciding with the normal direction of a layer formed by the chiral smectic phase, in which the liquid crystal molecule which is arranged on either of a first aligning direction and a second aligning direction will be arranged in correspondent with the applied voltage on the other alignment direction to form within a scope shorter than the wavelength of light of visible light band a plurality of areas different from one another in alignment state and change the director^s direction in relation to the rate of the area of the first alignment state versus that of the second alignment state.
