Abstract
A controller for encoding information in digital communication system utilizing at least four modulation levels for transmitting the information as symbols, in which each symbol represents symbol bits in symbol bit positions, and at least one of the symbol bit positions exhibits an error rate higher than that of another of the positions, comprises: (1) An encoder for encoding the information into an even number of code words which includes code word bits in code word bit positions; (2) A interleave device linked with the encoder for transmitting the even number of code words as an interleaved data stream, in which the transmission order of the code word bits is rearranged in a predetermined way to form a modified transmission order such that the code word are transmitted with substantially equal error rate.
