Abstract
A process of treating a gas stream containing hydrogen sulfide, which comprises in a reaction zone bringing a hydrogen sulfide-containing gas stream comprising less than 20% (volume) of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, air, light saturated hydrocarbons and/or light unsaturated hydrocarbons, into contact with a sintered deposited ferric oxide catalyst having a surface area of 2-300m2/g and a micropore volume of 0.9-0.05 cm3/g and comprising a structural promotor exhibiting very little or no Claus activity; maintaining the reaction zone at a substantially atmospheric pressure and a temperature of between 150 degree C and 350 degree C; using a space volume up to 8000 volume of gas per hour per unit volume of catalyst in the reaction zone; putting an oxygen-containing gas into the reaction zone to supply oxygen required by hydrogen sulfide, in which a sufficient amount of oxygen-containing gas maintains a molar ratio of oxygen to hydrogen sulfide of at least 0.5:10, thereby converting the hydrogen sulfide in the gas stream into elemental sulfur.
