A detergent composition, which exerts a sufficient detergency and foaming power even in the presence of oily stains and contains the following components (a) and (b), in which the weight ratio of the content of the component (a) to the content of the component (b) [(a)/(b)] is from 0.1 to 100; the molar ratio of the total divalent metal salt ions (X) in the whole composition and to total anionic surfactants (Y) including the component (a) (X/Y) is from 0.025 to 10; and the composition contains substantially no component (z) as specified below or the content of the component (z) is not more than 10 % by weight based on the sum of the contents of the components (a) and (b): (a) an amide ether carboxylate represented by the following formula (I): (see claim 1) in which R1 represents a linear orbranched alkyl or alkenyl group having 5 to 21 carbon atoms;n and m represent respectively the average number of moles of(CH2CH2O) added and the average number of moles of (see claim 1)added and each represents a number of from 0 to 20, provided thatthey satisfy the formula 1 <- n + m <- 20, and when m and n is respectively not 0, the copolymerization form of (CH2CH2O) and (see claim 1)is random, block or alternating; A represents (see claim 1), ahydrogen atom, or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, inwhich k and j each represents an average degree of polymerization of from 0 to 20, provided that they satisfy the formula 0 <- k + j <- 20, and when k and j is respectively not 0, the copolymerization form of(CH2CH2O) and (see claim 1) is random, block or alternating; andM represents an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, ammonium,an alkanolammonium or a basic amino acid, and (see claim 1) and(see claim 1) j may represent respectively propyleneoxy orpolypropyleneoxy group when m and j is respectively not 0, and the methyl group can be bonded at the 2-position in place of 1-position of the ethoxy unit; (b) an amide ether represented by the following formula (II): (see claim 1) in which B represents (see claim 1), a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, in which R1, n, m, k and j are each as defined above, and when m and n is respectively not 0, the copolymerization form of (see claim 1) is random, block or alternating, and in the above formula (I) and (II), R1, n, m, k and j may be either the same or different, and (see claim 1)m and (see claim 1)j may represent respectively propyleneoxy or polypropyleneoxy group when m and j is respectively not 0, and the methyl group can be bonded at the 2-position in place of 1-position of the ethoxy unit; and (z) glycerol or a glyceryl ether represented by the following formula (III): (see claim III) in which R represents a hydrogen atom, -(CH2CH2O)pCH2COOM or -(CH2CH2O)qH and three Rs in a molecule may be either the same or different, in which p and q may be either the same or different and each represents a number of 1 to 20, and M represents a hydrogen atom, an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, ammonium or an alkanolammonium.
