Abstract

The invention relates to a mechanism for tilting a direct current arc furnace and a method for completelyraining the furnace while operating the furnace with continuous scrap charging via a lateral opening (15) in the furnace shell (1) and a liquid heel at the same time. The scrap chute (14) remains at the opening (15) in the fur-nace during the continuous charging, melt-down, deslagging and steel tapping operations; it is swivelled away only for the compalete drainage of the furnace. By means of the tilting mechanism according to the invention, wherein a cam (10) is attached to the cradle (4) , the centre of rotation (5a) remains in zero position in a tilting range from q 5deg to q 15deg, and it moves parallel to the bottom tap-hole opening (2a) to a different position (5a) only during complete drainage. The position of the bottom taphole opening (2b,2c) should change only negligibly in a tilting range from e.g.+ 10del (steel tapping) to + 25 del (drainage of the heel ) in order torotect the parts of the bottom electrode (13) located outside the furnace shell (1) against the heat radiated by the steel from the steel casting ladle (11).
