Description

Makeup product trial system

The present disclosure relates generally to cosmetic, hair care, body care, and/or skin care products, and more particularly, to systems and methods for samples, samples, and/or full-scale products.

Cosmetic and/or skin care products and applicators can have many different visual properties. For example, a product such as a lipstick may be offered in different colors or shades, gloss levels (eg, matte, satin, or sheer), and/or may have varying degrees of transfer resistance. From time to time, a consumer may wish to test many different products before purchasing a full-size version of the product. Existing trial systems frequently include an excess of single-use packaging that may be expensive to manufacture and/or may present environmental concerns. Current try-and-test experiences may not mimic full-size products, and thus may not provide consumers with a similar experience as when using full-size products. More specifically, current try-and-test experiences are provided in small sizes, which can be difficult to hold and can present other ergonomic challenges. If the consumer had a variety of different samples each in a separate package, the user would need to carry each package with him, which could create confusion and be a hindrance to testing. Accordingly, there is a need for improved accessories with improved functionality.

Examples within the scope of this disclosure relate to a system for samples, coupons and/or full-scale products. Such a system may include: a container defining at least one cavity; a product tray; a cosmetic product; an applicator; and an applicator engagement mechanism operably coupled with the applicator. The product tray includes a first side, a second side, a body extending therebetween, and a tray engagement mechanism. At least a portion of the first side of the product tray is selectively positionable adjacent at least one cavity of the container. A cosmetic product is at least partially disposed on the first side of the product tray. The applicator has a first end including an applicator retention area. At least a portion of the second side of the product tray can be positioned adjacent to the applicator holding area. The product tray is removably coupled to the cavity of the container and the applicator engagement mechanism. In some examples, the tray engagement mechanism may include a protrusion extending beyond the second side of the product tray. Additionally, in some examples, the applicator engagement mechanism may include a gripping member disposed within a cavity of the applicator. The gripping member can grip the protrusion of the disc engagement mechanism to selectively couple the product disc with the applicator. Additionally, in these and other examples, the gripping member can include a plurality of arms constructed of a resilient material. The applicator engagement mechanism may further include an urging member that moves toward the first end of the applicator to urge the protrusion to release the product disc from the first end of the applicator. In variations of these embodiments, the container may also define an applicator cavity that holds at least a portion of the applicator. In some examples, the makeup product and/or skin care product may be in the form of at least one of: lipstick, foundation, concealer, eye shadow, bronzer, brow tint, solid serum, solid SPF product, skin care item , solid face cream, lip balm, applicator tip, brush, solid blush, solid contour stick, impregnated sponge or carrier, or semi-solid skin care or makeup product. In some approaches, the body of the product tray may define a visual indicator that allows identification of the cosmetic product when the product tray is positioned adjacent the at least one cavity. In some examples, the container can define a second cavity. The system may further include a second cosmetic product disposed at least partially on the second product tray. The second cosmetic product may have visual properties different from the visual properties of the cosmetic product. According to another aspect, a reusable product system includes: an applicator; an applicator engagement mechanism operatively coupled to the applicator; a product tray; and a cosmetic product. The applicator has a first end including an applicator retention area. The product tray has a first side, a second side, a body extending therebetween, and a tray engaging mechanism. At least a portion of the second side of the product tray can be positioned adjacent to the applicator holding area. A cosmetic product is at least partially disposed on the first side of the product tray. An applicator engagement mechanism removably couples the applicator to the product tray.

provided, which system has a modular character. The try-on system described herein allows users to quickly and seamlessly change or interchange different cosmetic and/or skin care products and applicators to apply to their face and/or skin as desired. The system allows for the use of reusable components and reduces overall product packaging requirements. In some examples, when a user determines which sample products they would like to purchase in larger (ie, full-sized) quantities, the system may similarly accommodate such larger quantities therein. Turning to the figures, a cosmetic and/or skin care product try-on system 100 includes a cosmetic and/or skin care product 101 , a container 102 , an applicator 120 and any number of product trays 150 . While the illustrated example depicts a lipstick product, in other examples product 101 may be any number or combination of different cosmetic and/or skin care products. For example, product 101 may be in the form of a foundation, concealer, eye shadow, bronzer, brow tint, solid serum, solid SPF product, skin care item, solid face balm, lip balm, applicator tip (such as a sponge ), brushes, solid blushers, solid contouring sticks, impregnated sponges or carriers capable of holding liquid skincare or makeup products, or semi-solid skincare or makeup products. The container 102 includes a base 104 having an interior cavity 104 a , a lid 106 , and a hinge 105 rotatably coupling the lid 106 to the base 104 . In other examples (not shown), the cover 106 may be operably coupled to the base 104 via any number of suitable methods, such as, for example, a friction fit connection, a threaded connection, a magnetic connection, a vacuum or suction mechanism, and the like. Other examples are possible. Container 102 may be constructed from any number of suitable materials and/or combinations of materials, such as, for example, metals, polymers, and the like. As illustrated in FIG. 1 , container 102 has a generally rectangular prism shape, although other suitable examples, such as cylindrical, are possible. The container 102 also includes a divider or ceiling 108 having a number of openings 108 a (eg, six) sized to receive a corresponding number of trays 110 . The divider 108 may also include an applicator opening 108b sized to receive an applicator 120 . Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3 , each tray 110 includes: a support boss 111 having a lower surface 111 a and an upper surface 111 b ; a side wall 112 extending downward from the support boss 111 ; and a lower surface 113 . The lower surface 111a of the support boss 111 is adapted to rest on (i.e., be positioned adjacent to) the divider 108 such that the remaining sidewall 112 and lower surface 113 are at least partially disposed within the opening 108a (and thus into the interior cavity 104a of the base 104). In some examples, the lower surface 111a of the support boss 111 (and thus the tray 110) and the divider 108 may be coupled to each other using magnets, adhesives, friction fit coupling, or the like. Other examples are possible. As illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4 , sidewall 112 and lower surface 113 combine to define cavity 114 , which is sized to receive and/or retain at least a portion of product tray 150 and/or be disposed thereon. 101 of a certain amount of makeup products. As illustrated in FIG. 3 , in some examples, sidewall 112 may have a curved, angled, and/or tapered surface relative to lower surface 113 . In these configurations, the side walls 112 may serve as a stop mechanism to retain and/or prevent further advancement of the product tray 150 in a downward direction into the cavity 114 by frictional engagement therebetween. In other examples, such detent mechanisms may take the form of frictional engagements, notches, tabs, protrusions, or the like. Other examples are possible. In yet other examples, sidewall 112 may include a raised area (not shown) to retain and/or prevent further advancement of product tray 150 into cavity 114 . Referring to FIGS. 5-12 , the applicator 120 includes a cap 121 , an applicator base 122 , an applicator tube 124 and an applicator engagement mechanism 130 . The applicator base 122 may serve as a handle for a user to grasp when applying a desired cosmetic product 101 and includes an opening 123 to receive a portion of an applicator tube 124 . Applicator tube 124 includes: a first end 124a; a second end 124b; a generally hollow body extending therebetween having an interior cavity 124c including an interior platform 124d; and an applicator retention region 126. Applicator tube 124 extends along longitudinal axis "A". In the illustrated example, the applicator tube 124 is generally cylindrical in shape, although other configurations are possible. Applicator retaining region 126 is positioned at first end 124a of applicator tube 124, and includes first end 126a, second end 126b, and boss or countersunk region 128 that is sized to receive and engage Part of product tray 150 . In the illustrated example, the applicator retention area 126 is in the form of a separate member that is frictionally formed via a groove formed on the applicator tube 124 and a corresponding protrusion formed on the first end 126a of the applicator retention area 126 . The mating engagement is operatively coupled with the applicator tube 124 . However, other arrangements are possible including, for example, the applicator retention region 126 being integrally formed with the applicator tube 124 . The applicator retention area 126 is generally hollow and defines an interior cavity 126c. In the illustrated example, the second end 126a of the applicator retaining region 126 is obliquely angled relative to the longitudinal axis A, although other relative configurations are possible. Thus, in this configuration, the second end 126a of the applicator retention region 126 has a generally planar oval shape. The second end 124b of the applicator tube 124 is insertable into the opening 123 of the applicator base 122 and can be secured thereto via a variety of methods such as, for example, threaded connection, friction fit connection, use of protrusions and corresponding indentations, and the like. In some examples, applicator base 122 and applicator tube 124 may be movably coupled to each other such that relative axial movement therebetween may be permitted. Other examples are possible. As will be discussed in further detail herein, the second end 124b of the applicator tube 124 also includes an opening 125 . As illustrated in FIGS. 6-8 , the applicator engagement mechanism 130 is disposed at least partially within the interior cavity 124c of the applicator tube 124 and the interior cavity 126c of the applicator retention region 126 . In some examples (not shown), a portion of the applicator engagement mechanism 130 may not extend into the interior cavity 126c of the applicator retention region 126 . The applicator engagement mechanism 130 includes a pusher member 132 and a clamping member 140 . Pushing member 132 is in the form of a rod or elongated member having a first end 132a and a second end 132b. The first end 132 a of the pushing member 132 defines a contact surface 133 . The pusher member 132 also includes a flange 134 positioned near its second end 132b. The second end 132b of the pusher member 132 extends through the opening 125 of the applicator tube 124 to any desired length (eg, between about 0.1" and about 5"). Clamping member 140 includes a first end 140a, a second end 140b, and defines a body having an interior cavity 140c. The first end 140a of the clamping member 140 includes a port 142 positioned adjacent a boss 144 . As illustrated in FIGS. 7 and 8 , the clamping member 140 is at least partially disposed within the interior cavity 124c of the applicator tube 124 such that the boss 144 of the clamping member 140 is positioned to coincide with the boss 144 formed on the applicator tube 124. The inner lands 124d on the inner cavity 124c are adjacent to limit movement toward the second end 124b of the applicator tube 124 . The second end 140b of the clamping member 140 includes a plurality of arms 145 . In some examples, arms 145 are constructed of a resilient material. Each arm 145 is separated by a slit 146 . The second end 140b of the clamping member 140 is generally hourglass shaped, which means that when the clamping member 140 is advanced towards its first end 140a, two inverted tapers form the outermost wide region 145a, to the narrow region 145b, And back to the wide area. Narrow region 145b defined by arm 145 receives elastomeric material (eg, band, O-ring, etc.) 147 capable of expanding and contracting. Strap 147 biases arms 145 into the closed configuration. The first end 132a of the pushing member 132 extends through the port 142 of the clamping member 140 and into the internal cavity 140c thereof. The pushing member 132 is movable relative to the clamping member 140 within the inner cavity 140c. A resilient member 131 is also disposed within the interior cavity 124c of the applicator tube 124 and positioned between the flange 134 and the clamping member 140 to bias the flange 134 against the second end 124b of the applicator tube 124 . So configured, and as will be discussed in detail below, a user can depress the second end 132b of the pusher member 132 to cause its contact surface 133 to advance toward the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124 . Turning to Figures 9-11, the product tray 150 is in the form of a body having a first or lower side 150a, a second or upper side 150b, and an outer side wall 150c. A support member or frame 151 extends through the disc 150 and defines a plurality of openings or through holes 152 . In the illustrated example, each of the first side 150a and the second side 150b is generally planar as defined by the support member 151 . However, other arrangements are possible. The first side 150a of the product tray 150 includes a product receiving surface 154 and a raised outer edge 155 positioned around the periphery of the product receiving surface 154 . Referring to FIGS. 4 and 11 , the product receiving surface 154 is sized to receive a sample amount of the product 101 thereon. For example, product receiving surface 154 may hold an amount of lipstick sufficient for between about two and about ten applications. Other examples of suitable amounts are possible. In the illustrated example, the product 101 protrudes outwardly from the product receiving surface 154 and forms an oval shape, although other arrangements are possible depending on the desired application pattern and/or profile. The second side 150b of the product tray 150 includes a tray coupling mechanism 156 in the form of a protrusion 158 located at a central portion of the support member 151 extending away from the second side 150b. More specifically, the protrusion 158 is in the form of a rod having a ball 160 positioned at the outermost portion (ie, positioned away from the second end 150b of the product tray 150). In general, the disc coupling mechanism 156 is adapted to selectively engage the applicator retaining region 126 of the applicator tube 124 and the applicator engaging mechanism 130 . More specifically, ball 160 of disc coupling mechanism 156 is sized and configured to be received within interior cavity 126c of applicator retention region 126 . Additionally, at least a portion of the outer side wall 150c of the product tray 150 (i.e., the portion adjacent the second side 150b) is sized and configured to receive and/or nest within the boss or countersunk region 128 of the applicator retention region 126. Inside. Similarly, product tray 150 is sized such that it may be positioned adjacent to and/or at least partially within cavity 114 of tray 110 . More specifically, in some arrangements, the dimensions of the outer side walls 150c of the product tray 150 may be smaller than the corresponding dimensions of the perimeter of the cavity 114 of the tray as defined by the side walls 112 . Accordingly, at least a portion of the body of the product tray 150 (ie, the first side 150a ) may be positionable and/or nestable within the cavity 114 of the tray 110 . In some examples and as previously described, the tapered configuration of the side walls 112 may serve as a physical restriction that prevents further placement of the product tray 150 into the cavity 114 of the tray 110 . As a result, when the product tray 150 is positioned adjacent to the cavity 114 and/or at least partially within the cavity 114, a space or space may be formed between the product receiving surface 154 of the product tray 150 and the lower surface 113 of the tray 110. The gap, space or gap is of sufficient size to hold the product 101 . Accordingly, the product 101 may be safely disposed within the cavity 114 without being damaged by the side walls 112 and/or the lower surface 113 of the tray 110 . So arranged, the second side 150b of the product tray 150 (and more specifically, the protrusion 158 ) can be positioned adjacent to the upper surface 111b of the support boss 111 and/or can be removed from the upper surface of the support boss 111. 111b extends upward. As illustrated in FIG. 4 , one or more through holes 152 allow a portion of product 101 to be disposed therethrough and/or are alternatively operable as either a window or a visual indicator, wherein the window or visual indicator The indicator allows a user to determine the appearance (eg, shade, color, and/or other visual characteristics) of products 101 disposed on the product receiving surface 154 of the product tray 150 when the product tray 150 is positioned within the cavity 114 of the tray 110. In operation, any number of product trays 150 may be removably retained within respective cavities 114 of tray 110, which cavities 114 are in turn disposed within corresponding openings 108a of dividers 108 disposed at the base 104 in the inner cavity 104a. Each of these trays 150 may include samples of product 101 that have different visual properties (e.g., different colors or shades, gloss levels (e.g., matte, satin, or clear), and/or may have different degree of transfer resistance). A user can determine which sample of product 101 they wish to apply by looking at product 101 through aperture 152 of product tray 150 . In selecting a desired product 101, the user can position the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124 (and, more specifically, the second end 126b of the applicator holding area 126) near the ball 159 of the product tray 150 and can Moving the applicator 120 toward the ball 159 causes the protrusion 158 to enter the interior cavity 126c of the applicator retaining region 126 and engage the second end 140b of the gripping member 140 . More specifically, the ball 159 engages the outermost wide region 145a of the arm 145, and when pressed continuously by the user, the ball 159 will cause the arm 145 and strap 147 to expand and increase in diameter allowing the ball 159 to push beyond the narrow region 145b and into the rest of the interior cavity 140c. As illustrated in FIG. 7 , in this position the ball 159 is disposed adjacent to or near the contact surface 133 of the pusher member 132 . Furthermore, as the ball 159 moves beyond the narrow region 145b of the arm 145, the band 147 will contract, thus causing the arm 145 to similarly contract to a size smaller than the size of the ball 159, thus retaining the ball 159 in the internal cavity of the clamping member 140 Within 140c. Additionally, in this configuration, the outer sidewall 150c of the product tray 150 nests within the boss 128 of the applicator retention region 126 to retain the product tray 150 within a portion of its interior cavity 126c. The user can then lift the applicator 120 off the tray 110, which will in turn cause the product disc 150 to be removed from the tray. The user can then apply a sample of product 101 as desired. So configured, the clamping member 140 and the boss 128 hold the product tray 150 in a secure manner. In some examples, the engagement between applicator 120 and product disc 150 may generate tactile feedback to alert the user that applicator 120 and product disc 150 are fully coupled together. In some examples, a user may place cap 121 onto applicator base 122 while product tray 150 is coupled with applicator 120 for storage purposes. The product disc 150 can be disengaged from the applicator 120 by positioning the first side 150a near and/or within the cavity 114 of the tray 110 and inwardly in the axial direction towards the first end 124a of the applicator tube 124 The second end 132b of the pushing member 132 is engaged (eg, pushed). This pushing causes contact surface 133 to engage and push ball 159 against narrow region 145b of arm 145 . Continued pushing will cause the ball 145 to be pressed against the narrow region 145b until the band 147 expands to a size that allows the ball 159 to pass therethrough and into the outermost wide region 145a of the arm 145, at which point the product disc 150 will disengage from the applicator engagement mechanism. 130 disengages and may drop into or near the desired cavity 114 . In some examples, sidewall 112 may include magnets to assist in retaining product tray 150 within cavity 114 . In some examples, pusher member 132 may be sized to extend through a rearmost portion of applicator base 122 when applicator tube 124 is coupled with applicator base 122 . In these arrangements, the user may depress push member 132 as previously described to disengage product disc 150 from applicator 120 . In other examples, the pushing member 132 may be sized such that a portion of the second end 132b is positioned adjacent the wall defined by the opening 123 of the applicator base 122 . In these examples, the user may press the applicator base 122 while holding the applicator tube 124 to cause relative movement therebetween, which in turn will cause the walls defined by the opening 123 to push the push member 132 forward to cause the product tray 150 Detach from applicator 120. In still other examples, the push member 132 may include a threaded connection that threadably engages the applicator tube 124 and/or the applicator base 122 . In such an arrangement, when the applicator tube 124 and/or applicator base 122 are twisted, the pusher member 132 can be advanced to push the ball 159 . Other examples are possible. In selectively disengaging the product tray 150 from the applicator 120, the user can couple a different product tray 150 to the applicator 120 to apply the desired product 101, or can return the applicator to the applicator cavity as desired 116. So configured, a user can quickly and selectively try any number of different cosmetic and/or skin care products 101 to determine a desired product for subsequent purchase. In some examples, the applicator tube 124 may be sized to accommodate a full-sized amount of product 101 to allow the same applicator 120 to be used for trying out different products 101 . In such examples, the applicator tube 124 may include an advance/retract mechanism. In other examples, when a user determines which full-size product they wish to purchase, the applicator tube 124 can be removed from the base 122, and a replacement applicator (not shown) can be inserted into the base 122, including Product 101 in full size quantities. In some examples, product trays 150 can be reused and/or recycled when returning them to the manufacturer, thereby potentially reducing overall component and manufacturing costs. It will be appreciated that any number of modifications may be made to system 100 . For example, FIG. 13 illustrates an alternative applicator engagement mechanism 230 that includes a clamping member 240 with arms 245 that are generally outwardly biased or flared. In such an arrangement, the applicator holding area (not shown) may include a closed opening of sufficiently small diameter to cause the arms 245 to be held in a closed configuration to secure the product disc. Thus, when the arm is disposed within the cavity of the actuator, the arm is prevented from spreading. As the engagement mechanism 230 is advanced beyond the closed opening, the arms 245 can flare outward to release the product tray. Furthermore, in some examples, each of applicator coupling mechanism 126 and disc coupling mechanism 156 may have a reverse configuration whereby an applicator is inserted into a portion of a product disc. Other arrangements are possible. In the foregoing specification, specific examples have been described. However, one of ordinary skill in the art appreciates that various modifications and changes can be made without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the claims below. Accordingly, the specification and drawings are to be regarded in an illustrative rather than a restrictive sense, and all such variations are intended to be included within the scope of present teachings. Furthermore, the described examples/implementations should not be construed as being mutually exclusive, and should instead be understood as potentially being able to be combined (if such combination is permitted anyway).
