Abstract

A purpose of the present invention is to attain downsizing and increase visibility in a display device in which light is illuminated on an illuminated object having a display surface to perform displaying. In the display device of the present invention, a panel-like illumination device 20 is disposed to oppose to a display surface 10D of an instrument 10 which is an illuminated object. In the illumination device 20, luminescent areas E which are finely patterned are arranged to oppose to the display surface 10D of the instrument 10. Moreover, in the illumination device 20, at the side which is not opposed to the display surface 10D of the instrument 10 (namely, the observer side), a shielding layer S is disposed on the luminescent areas E. The illumination light irradiated from the luminescent areas E is uniformly illuminated on the display surface 10D of the instrument 10 and reflected to the observer side, and then passes transparent areas of the illumination device 20 to be recognized. In this regard, the shielding layer S restricts the illumination light irradiated from the luminescent areas E from being directly recognized by observers.
