Abstract

A decoding device is disclosed for decoding encoded signals received by a receiving apparatus having a Viterbi decoder. The decoding device includes an equalizer for compensating distortion of the encoded signals and protecting signals received by the receiving apparatus from inter-symbol interference (ISI), a pre-decision device for receiving and processing signals compensated by the equalizer and feeding the processed signals back to the equalizer, for the equalizer to compensate the fed signals transmitted from the pre-decision device continuously, and a reduced symbol alphabet sequence estimation (RSASE) circuit for receiving signals processed by the pre-decision device and selecting, in accordance with a compensation process performed by the equalizer, a best symbol from a predefined range formed by symbols required by the pre-decision device after processing the compensated signals. The best symbol and the symbols are used for the Viterbi decoder when performing a decoding process.
