Abstract

Selective production of hydrogen by partial oxidation of methanol (CH3OH+1/2O2 → 2H2+CO2) over Au/CuO-ZnO catalysts, prepared by co-precipitation method was studied. This application improves purity of hydrogen and reduces CO content. The Au/CuO-ZnO catalysts exhibit spherical gold particles. They are distributed homogeneously over the support and exhibited a narrow size (1-5 nm) distribution over Au/CuO-ZnO prepared by CP method. The samples were prepared from HAuCl4 and Cu(NO3)3*xH2O, Zn(NO3)3*xH2O solution. The mixing solutions were added drop wise to a stirred solution of Na2CO3 at 70 DEG C. The final pH of the aged solution before filtration was 8.5. The final solid was filtered, dried at 100 DEG C and then calcined in air at 300 to 400 DEG C for 3 h. The Au/CuO-ZnO catalysts were tested by the partial oxidation of methanol (POM) at 175 to 275 DEG C. The catalysts precipitated at pH 8.5 and calcined at 300 DEG C show highest activity for hydrogen generation. There is a trace of carbon monoxide detected, when the O2/CH3OH molar ratio in the feed is 0.5.
