Abstract

An operating mode determination system and method are disclosed. When an electronic device with a universal serial bus (USB) connection interface is connected to a data processing device with a USB port through the USB connection interface, the present invention is used for determining an operating mode between the electronic device and the data processing device. The characteristic of the present invention is to utilize a detection unit to detect hardware pin potential on the USB connection interface of the electronic device, a power supply status of the electronic device and a connection status between the electronic device and the data processing device when the electronic device is connected to the data processing device; then, utilize a control module to determine the operating mode between the electronic device and the data processing device according to the hardware pin potential on the USB connection interface of the electronic device, the power supply status of the electronic device and the connection status between the electronic device and the data processing device detected by the detection unit, wherein the operating modes comprise a data transmission mode and a charging mode. Therefore, by means of the corresponding operations of the detection unit and the control module, the present invention could automatically detect the operating mode between the electronic device and the data processing device, thereby not only increasing the functionality of the USB connection interface, but also enhancing the usage convenience.
