Abstract

This invention provides a flat-type image display device comprising a front substrate having a fluorescent substance screen provided on the inner surface of a transparent substrate and a backside substrate that comprises a plurality of electron release elements and is disposed opposite to the front substrate. An impact absorbing layer composed mainly of a polymer having a durometer A hardness of 20 to 60 is provided on the outer surface of the front substrate, and a light antireflection layer is provided on the impact absorbing layer. A transparent silicone polymer having a total light transmittance of not less than 90% may be mentioned as the polymer constituting the impact absorbing layer. The impact absorbing layer may contain 0.0005 to 0.005% by weight of a dye. Preferably, a urethane polymer having good restoring force is used as a base material for the light antireflection layer. The flat-type image display device is advantageous in that the effect of preventing damage to a front substrate upon external impact is high, is less likely to cause the exposure of a double image upon external light reflection, and, further, images having high quality can be produced in a light weight at low cost.
