Abstract

System performance in wireless communication is improved by increasing diversity in time, space and frequency. In an OFDM-based MIMO system, each antenna can be used to transmit one OFDM symbol at a time. When the number of antennas M is greater than the number of simultaneously transmitted OFDM symbols N, circulation transmissions according to the present invention improve signal diversity. Circulation transmission can be either symbol-based or sub-carrier based. In symbol-based circulation transmission, N antennas are chosen, based on a circular pattern, from the M available antennas to simultaneously transmit the N OFDM symbols, with one antenna transmitting an OFDM symbol. In subcarrier-based circulation transmission, again N OFDM symbols are processed at a time. Now each subcarrier within each of the N OFDM symbols is individually re-mapped, based on a circular pattern, to create M OFDM symbols. These M re-mapped OFDM symbols are then transmitted from the M antennas simultaneously, with one antenna transmitting one remapped OFDM symbol.
