Abstract

The present invention provides a device and method for driving a plurality of LEDs that are used in a direct type backlight module as the light source. The device of the invention comprises a drive controller and a plurality of drivers. The drive controller receives the timing signal coming from the display and activates the operation of the drivers by way of series or parallel connection. Each driver is connected to the plurality of LEDs and drives the same by electric drive pulses. The drivers can automatically detect the amount of the output current or voltage and automatically compensate for the brightness loss caused by the breakdown of individual LED by increasing the work period of the electric output pulse. The method of the invention is provided to control the amount of outputted drive pulses within a fixed time frame (like within every image time), enabling the device to (1) control the color temperature of the backlight module, and (3) automatically compensate for the reduction of the brightness caused by the raise of temperature.
