Abstract

Disclosed is an optical film exhibiting various optical characteristics, heat resistance and cohesion/adhesion to other materials of a thermoplastic norbornene resin. This optical film is controlled so that the optical axis in the film thickness is tilted. Also disclosed are a method for producing such an optical film and a polarizing plate using such an optical film. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing an optical film wherein a melt-extruded thermoplastic norbornene resin film is passed between two rolls having different peripheral velocities so that the optical axis in the film thickness direction is tilted. Also disclosed are an optical film obtained by such a production method, and a polarizing plate having a structure wherein a protective film is arranged on each side of a polarizing film and the optical film is used as at least one of the protective films.
