Abstract

Disclosed is a process for producing a long fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin molding material which has a high resin impregnation property and an excellent productivity. The process comprises the steps of introducing an unbroken reinforced fiber bundle to an impregnation die, immersing the reinforced fiber bundle in a molten thermoplastic resin, and drawing out the reinforced fiber bundle through a nozzle to give a desired long fiber-reinforced thermoplastic resin molding material. The reinforced fiber bundle is preheated by passing it through a preheat chamber where hot air is streamed in the same direction as that of the bundle-drawing direction and then introduced to the impregnation die. Preferably, the hot air has a temperature falling within the range from a temperature lower by 100 DEG C than the melting temperature of the thermoplastic resin to a temperature higher by 10 DEG C than the melting temperature of the thermoplastic resin, a stream velocity of 10 to 120 m/min, and a stream volume of 1 to 8 m3/min.
