Abstract

To provide a surge absorber with long life, having a main discharge face covered by an oxide layer excellent in adhesive force, chemically stable in high temperature area at a sealing process and main discharge. The surge absorber is composed of a column-shaped ceramic 4 on which, conductive films 3 are formed in separation through a discharge gap 2; a pair of main discharge electrode members 5 arranged so as to face each other, contacting the conductive electrodes 3; and a cylinder-shaped ceramic 8, in which the column-shaped ceramic 4 is enclosed together with sealing gas 7. A glass member is sealed in the cylinder-shaped ceramic 8.
