Abstract

A liquid crystal display device comprising a low-refractive index layer, a first polarizer on the viewing side, at least one biaxial optical anisotropic element, a liquid cell and a second polarizer on the incident side, disposed in this order, wherein the following three requisites are satisfied: (1)Nx > Ny > Nz (where Nx, Ny: in-plane main refractive indexes of the optical anisotropic element, Nz: main refractive index in the thickness direction), (2) the low-refractive index layer is composed of aerogel having a refractive index ≤ 1.37, and (3) | R40-R0 | ≤ 35 nm (where R40: retardation when light with a wavelength of 550 nm is incident in normal direction and R0: retardation when light with a wavelength of 550 nm is incident at angles of 40 degree away from the nodal, wherein no voltage is not imposed in the state where the biaxial optical anisotropic element and the liquid cell are superposed, but the first polarizer and the second polarizer are not superposed).
