Abstract
A spread illuminating apparatus in which the leak light from a point light source can be directed to the light input surface of a light guide plate with high efficiency and the luminance is improved without marring the uniformity. The spread illuminating apparatus (10) comprises a light guide plate (11) having light input surfaces (12a, 12b) at an edge part and point light sources (16a, 16b) arranged on the light input surfaces (12a, 12b). The spread illuminating apparatus (10) further comprises reflecting means (21) covering the point light sources (16a, 16b) from at least a major surface (for example, a surface (13)) of the light guide plate (11). The reflecting means (21) has a reflecting surface inclined with respect to the light input surfaces. With this, most of the light leaking from the point light sources (16a, 16b) toward the major surface (13) can be reflected toward the light input surfaces (12a, 12b), thus uniformly improving the luminance of the spread illuminating apparatus .
