Abstract

This invention relates to an agent for maintaining embryonic stem cells in the undifferentiated state which contains a protein belonging to the Wnt family as the active ingredient; a medium for maintaining embryonic stem cells in the undifferentiated state which contains the above agent; a process for producing embryonic stem cells characterized by comprising culturing inner cell mass cells obtained from a mammalian embryo at the blastocyst stage in the presence of the above agent to thereby give embryonic stem cells; and a method of maintaining embryonic stems cell in the undifferentiated state characterized by comprising maintaining established embryonic stem cells in the presence of the above agent.
