Abstract
Image quality is improved in an electronic reading device (300, 400), such as an electronic book using a bi-stable electrophoretic display, by providing a frame (622, 922, 932) around a sub-picture (620, 920, 930) when a visual characteristic such as greyscale or color level of the sub-picture differs from that of the background by more than a threshold amount due to drift in the background, e.g., from black to dark grey, or from white to light grey. The frame masks the appearance of the drift in the background by separating, e.g., a light grey background (610, 910) from a white sub-picture (620, 920, 930) using a black frame (622, 922, 932). A dictionary application is provided where typed in letters (B, a) and a corresponding image (934) are provided in respective sub-pictures (620, 920, 930).
