Abstract

A character generating apparatus is provided, which comprises a storage section for storing a shape of each of at least one character, a character code input section for inputting a character code corresponding to the character to be generated, a size specifying input section for specifying a bitmap size corresponding to a letter frame of the character, an enlargement/reduction type switch section for changing vertical and horizontal enlargement/reduction rates of a character frame separately, while preventing the character frame from jutting out of the letter frame, based on a type of the input character code and the specified bitmap size, an enlargement/reduction section for enlarging/reducing data, indicating the shape of the character to the specified bitmap size by the enlargement/reduction rate specified by the enlargement/reduction type switch section, and an output section for outputting data enlarged/reduced by the enlargement/reduction section.
