Abstract

An anode structure is provided comprising a resilient appendage, formed of rigid or semi-rigid material, located at the bottom of the anode structure (that is, opposite the side that will be nearest to the opening in a cell structure including this anode structure) suitable for scraping used electrolyte from inside of the cells when the anode is removed. This scraping action will remove most of the used electrolyte. Further, the resilient appendage may be configured and dimensioned so as to spread a layer of electrolyte between the cathode and the cathode support structure or plastic frame, where bubbles may form during the refueling process. In another embodiment, a cell structure includes the aforementioned anode structure, the cell structure including at least one cathode therein to electrochemically react with active anode material of the anode structure. In a further embodiment, the aforementioned anode structure is laterally offset within the cell structure such that a gap exists between one edge of the anode structure and the inside of the cell frame, the resilient appendage including a portion extending in this gap, such that removal of the anode is facilitated. In still another embodiment, the aforementioned anode structure is laterally offset within the cell structure such that a gap exists between one edge of the anode structure and the inside of the cell frame, the resilient appendage including a portion extending in this gap, and the cell structure including a tapered portion at a top edge thereof, the tapered portion on the side of the cell structure opposite the side having the gap, such that removal of the anode by tilting the cell structure approximately 90 DEG, and pulling the anode structure away from the cell structure and in the direction of the tapered portion is facilitated.
