Abstract

A field emission lamp that serves as a rear light source of the liquid crystal display is disclosed. The field emission lamp comprises a plurality of cathode conductor strips 3 in parallel arranged on the glass substrate 1 of the cathode side. A thin graphite film is formed on the cathode conductor strips 3 by CVD. Opposite to the glass substrate 1 is the glass substrate 2 having a plurality of recessed portions 7 on the anode side and is in conformity with the recessed portions 7 formed with anode conductors 5. Each recessed portion 7 corresponds to a conductor strip 3. A phosphor layer is coated on the anode conductor strips 5. Both of the cathode and anode glass substrate 1, 2 are then sealed in a vacuum tube.
