Cold and hot applications are applied to reduce pain in the problem area. Applying certain physical agents that give or emit heat to a part or all of the body is called heat application. Hot application is generally preferred for long-standing (chronic) problems. Hot treatments reduce muscle pain and spasm. Hot applications increase body temperature and relax tissues, thus relieving fatigue, relieving pain and relieving joint tension. It provides maturation of abscesses and sedation. It accelerates recovery by reducing the need for medication. It is used to reduce edema and suppress inflammation. It is also preferred for the treatment of local abscesses and hemorrhoids. Cold application is a treatment method that uses some local or general physical agents to reduce the body's temperature. The purpose of cold applications is to reduce the blood flow/circulation to the affected area by lowering the temperature of the area or tissue. Thanks to this, it delays bacterial proliferation. The cold application method is generally used for newly occurring injuries and wounds. Cold application is also applied for foot and hand sprains and fractures, joint pain, traumas, and newly emerged problems related to joints in other areas or the skeletal structure. It reduces the oxygen need of the region. It is used after surgical operations (tonsil etc.), stomach and brain bleeding. Cold application slows down cell metabolism in the area where it is applied and creates vasoconstriction and local anesthetic effects. It reduces the feeling of tension and pain (headache, pain due to infection). In general, cold application is used for treatment of sudden (acute) injuries and pain. Inflammation (immune system activation) and edema are excessive in acute injuries and are reduced by cold treatment. Hot or cold applications are used to treat almost every disease affecting the musculoskeletal system. Hot and cold applications are treatments that physical therapy can perform. The main advantages of hot and cold applications are that they have pain relieving, muscle relaxant and edema reducing effects without using medication. Currently, hot applications are divided into dry heat and wet (moist) heat applications; It is produced as thermophore, aquathermic pad (pillow), electric pillows and blankets, heat lamps, heat pads and hot compresses. Cold applications are divided into dry cold and wet (moist) cold applications; It is done as ice packs, ice packs, wet cold application and cold wet compress. However, in some cases, both hot and cold applications must be used alternately on the same person or at the same time for different body parts.
