A free-standing film will consist of: i., a layer of matrix with an opposing surface, and ii. a row of nanorods, which are adapted to pass along the matrix layer and will protrude an average distance of at least 1 µm through one or both of the surfaces of the matrix layer. Methods for preparing free-standing films will include (a) selective supply of rows of nanorods onto the material, (b) insertion of the rows into the sacrificial layer, (c) insertion of the rows into the matrix layer, thus producing selectively inserted rows, (d) removal of the sacrificial layer without removal of the matrix layer, when step (b) is present, and (e) removal of the inserted rows from the material to form a free-standing film. Free-standing films have uses as optical filters, ACFs, or TIMs, depending on the type and density of the nanorods chosen.

Claims (35)
