A personal care formulation containing an antimicrobial agent, which is a general compound (I) (chemical formula) or a complex or salt of such compounds, where R is hydrogen, hydrocarbil group, substituted hydrocarbil group, acyl group, substituted acyl group or -COOR3 group; R1 is a hydrocarbil group or a substituted hydrocarbil group; R2 is a hydrocarbil group or a substituted hydrocarbil group; or R1 and R2 together with the nitrogen and carbon atoms attached to them forming a heterocyclic ring; and R3 is a hydrocarbil group.
