A single-unit disposable diaper consists of: a permeable top layer; a non-permeable back layer, also called the top layer; absorbent pathways; these pathways are placed between the top layer and the back layer; a first end; a second end opposite to the first end; the first longitudinal side; and the second longitudinal side. Each of these side barriers has a near edge pressed to the absorbent material, a far edge separated from the near edge, and an adhesive zone placed between the near and far edges. This adhesive zone is pressed to the diaper in an area between the side barriers and the near edge and the longitudinal side corresponding to the adhesive zone. To create a gap between the near and far edges along a section of the diaper's length, this adhesive zone is positioned along the length of the side barriers. The distance from the first end is approximately 150 mm to approximately 380 mm, and the width of each of these edge guards ranges from approximately 5 mm to 90 mm. Flexible components are incorporated to create a flexible, retractable structure for operation in a condition where each guard piece is flexible enough to distance the far edge from the near edge.
