The fluid in this seal acts as a massage effect on the person walking in the shoe as it flows back through the notch and across the free end of the paddle and the connecting plate.

A connecting plate attaches the long ends of the paddles to the wall of the bottom plate. Notches are made on the upper edge of the paddle and partially extend into the paddle, so that they are less than the height of the paddle itself. The fluid in this seal provides a massaging effect to the person walking in the shoe as it passes through the notches.
