A secondary absorbent layer has opposite longitudinal and transverse borders located beneath the fluid displacement layer. The distance between these transverse borders is greater than that of the fluid displacement layer. In this configuration, the primary and secondary absorbent layers are separated along the longitudinal borders in a way that fluid encountering the primary absorbent layer is prevented from flowing around the longitudinal borders and flows in the longitudinal direction of the absorbent element into the secondary absorbent layer.
