DC60 (28/05/52) This invention relates to a device for the purification of exhaust gases from a combustion engine (1), which consists of a first filter (10) placed in the exhaust pipe (7) between the engine (1) and the exhaust outlet (8) to remove particulate matter from the exhaust gases, and a return pipe (11) to redirect a portion of the exhaust gases that have passed through the aforementioned first filter (10) and recirculate this portion of the exhaust gases back to the engine's air intake (2). The device also consists of a second filter (30) placed between the inlet end (20) of the return pipe and the engine's air intake (2). This invention relates to a method for the purification of exhaust gases from a combustion engine. In addition, this invention relates to the use of the device for the purification of exhaust gases, specifically in diesel engines. This invention relates to a device for the purification of exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine (1), which consists of a first filter (10) placed in the exhaust pipe (7) between the engine (1) and the exhaust outlet (8) to remove particulate matter from the exhaust, and a return pipe (11) to redirect a portion of the exhaust gases that have passed through the aforementioned first filter (10) and recirculate this exhaust gas back to the engine's air intake (2). Claims (11)

1. The device for purifying the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine (1) consists of a first filter (10) placed in the exhaust pipe (7) between the engine (1) and the exhaust outlet (8) to remove particulate matter from the exhaust, and a recirculation pipe (11) to redirect a portion of the exhaust gases that have passed through the first filter (10) and recirculate this exhaust gas back to the engine's air intake (2). It is unique in that it incorporates a second filter (30) placed between the end of the recirculation pipe's inlet (12) and the engine's air intake (2). 2. The device under claim 1, which is characterized as a second filter (30), is designed to have a filtration efficiency that is lower than or significantly the same as that of the first filter (10). 3. The device under claim 2, which is characterized as a second filter (30) having a specified filtration quality that is lower than or significantly equal to the specified filtration quality of the first filter (10). 4. An apparatus under either claim 2 or 3 which is characterized by a second filter (30) having an absolute filtration quality that is lower than, or significantly equal to, the absolute filtration quality of the first filter (10). 5. An apparatus under one of the previously referred claims, which is of the nature of a second filter (30), has a filtration efficiency capable of trapping particulate matter that is of a nature that is damaging to the engine. 6. The device under claim 5, which is characterized as a second filter (30), has significantly the same filtration efficiency as a conventional air filter used for the engine. 7. An apparatus pursuant to one of the previously mentioned claims, which is of a specific nature, is a second filter (30) placed at the outlet end of the return pipe. 8. An apparatus under one of the previously mentioned claims, which is characterized as a first filter (10) incorporating a catalytic material for transferring compounds in the exhaust to less harmful substances to the environment. 9. An apparatus under any of the previously referred claims, which is characterized by the inclusion of a catalytic converter (9) placed in the exhaust pipe (7). 10. Method for Purifying Exhaust Gases from an Internal Combustion Engine (1) Exhaust gases are passed through the first filter (10), placed in the exhaust pipe (7) between the engine (1) and the exhaust outlet (8), to remove particulate matter from the exhaust. A portion of the exhaust gases that have passed through the first filter (10) is redirected through the recirculation pipe (11) and recirculated back to the engine's air intake (2). Specifically, the redirected exhaust gases pass through a second filter (30), placed between the end of the recirculation pipe (20) and the engine's air intake. 11. The use of any of the devices under claims 1-9 for the purification of exhaust gases from diesel engines.
