This invention relates to a method for inhibiting the growth of microorganisms in a metal-active fluid by adding benzyzothiazolin-3-one, formula (1), to a metal-active fluid (chemical formula) where R is C4-5 alkyl; R1 is hydroxyl, halogen (especially chlorinated), C1-4 alkyl or C1-4 alkoxy; and n is from 0 to 4.
