This outer layer consists of an alkaline substance that increases the pH of the washing water during the dissolution of the outer layer in the washing water. Claims (11)

1. A unit-sized laundry detergent additive for fabric softening or conditioning, suitable for addition to the wash cycle of the aforementioned automatic washing machine. This unit-sized additive consists of a granulated mixture containing fabric softener or conditioner. This granulated mixture is characterized by its spherical shape and the absence of an outer layer separating it from the fabric softener or conditioner. This outer layer consists of an alkaline substance that increases the pH of the wash water during the dissolution of the outer layer in the wash water. 2. Laundry compounds with usage sizes as defined in Patent 1, in which the aforementioned fabric softener or fabric conditioner consists of a softening clay combined with an organic fatty fabric softener. 3. Laundry compounds with unit usage sizes as per claim 2, in which the said clay softener is a montmorillonite-containing clay and the said organic fat-containing fabric softener is an erythritol compound ("PEC") selected from a group consisting of lower aliphatic acid esters of pentaerythritol, oligomers of pentaerythritol, derivatives of lower alkylene oxides of oligomers of pentaerythritol and mixtures thereof. 4. A laundry compound with unit usage size as per claim 2, in which the aforementioned clay softener is at least partially coated with the aforementioned organic fatty fabric softener and acts as a carrier for that fatty fabric softener. 5. Laundry detergents with usage sizes as defined in Patent 1, which are free from quaternary ammonium fabric softeners. 6. Laundry compounds with usage sizes as specified in Patent 1, where the fabric softener or fabric conditioner mentioned above is free of surfactant soap. 7. Laundry compounds with usage sizes as per claim 2, where the aforementioned clay softener is bentonite and the aforementioned PEC is a higher aliphatic ester of pentaerythritol or of an oligomer of pentaerythritol. 8. Laundry detergent mixtures with usage sizes as per claim 7, consisting of approximately 83% to approximately 90% bentonite and approximately 10% to approximately 17% of the aforementioned PEC by weight. 9. Fabric softening or conditioning processes, which involve the contact of garments with an effective amount of the mixture in the application units specified in claim 1. 10. The process pursuant to claim clause 9, in which the fabric softener consists of softening clay blended with an organic fat-based fabric softener. 11. The process pursuant to claim 10, in which the aforementioned clay softener is bentonite and the aforementioned organic fabric softener is composed of selected erythritol compounds (PEC) from groups consisting of lower aliphatic acid esters of pentaerythritol, oligomers of pentaerythritol, derivatives of lower alkylene oxides of oligomers of pentaerythritol and mixtures thereof.
