A dry pet food comprising at least 25% by weight of coarse pellets having a water activity of less than 0.7 and a density of less than 20.5 lb/cubic foot, and including a matrix containing a protein source, a carbohydrate source, and an insoluble fiber source. 9. The dry pet food of claim 8, wherein the matrix is at least 15 mm in length, at least 13.5 mm in width, and at least 12 mm in thickness. 1 0. A method for reducing tartar and plaque build-up on the pet's teeth, comprising the step of allowing the pet to chew on the dry pet food having a matrix including a denatured protein source. A gelatinized carbohydrate source and insoluble fiber from about 2 % to about 15 % by weight and having a density of less than 20.5 lb/cubic foot, wherein said dry pet food is formed into pellets, said pellets having a length of at least 15 mm, a width of at least 13.5 mm and a thickness of at least 12 mm. 1. 1. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of preparing the pet food into coarse pellets having a shape selected from triangle, pentagon and star shapes. 1. 2.
