The process for preparing 0-(6-alkoxy-2-tertiary-butyl-pyrimidine-4-yl)-0-methyl-thionoethane-phosphonic acid diester, general formula (I) (chemical formula), where R represents an alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl with 3 or 4 carbon atoms, involves the reaction between (a) 6-alkoxy-2-tertiary-butyl-4-hydroxy-pyrimidine, general formula (II) (chemical formula), where R has the meaning as defined above, with thionoethane-phosphonic acid chloride methyl ester, general formula (III) (chemical formula), either with the presence of an acid absorber or with the presence of a diluent, or (b) the reaction between 0-(6-alkoxy-2-tertiary-butyl-4-hydroxy-pyrimidine Re-butyl-pyrimidin-4-yl)-0-methyl-thionoethane-phosphonic acid diester, as general formula (IV) (chemical formula), with an alkyl additive, as general formula (V) R-X, where R has the meaning as defined above and X represents the detached nucleophilic group. This may be done in the presence of an acid receptor or in the presence of a diluting agent.
